Safety First: Protecting Yourself While Toad Busting

Volunteer safety is always the top priority.

Cane toads secrete toxins that can irritate skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Direct handling without protection is not recommended.

Basic safety guidelines

  • Wearing disposable or washable gloves
  • Avoiding contact with your face and eyes
  • Washing hands thoroughly after participation
  • Keeping pets and children away from collected toads

Minimum recommended PPE

Even for short, casual participation, the following is strongly recommended:

  • Gloves (disposable nitrile, or washable rubber/garden gloves)
  • Long pants and long sleeves
  • Closed footwear (no thongs, no sandals)
  • A torch for night activity, worn on a headlamp where possible, so hands remain free

After handling

  • Wash your hands and forearms thoroughly with soap and water before touching your face, food, or equipment
  • Clean any reusable gloves, buckets, or containers with hot, soapy water
  • Keep collected animals in a secure container, away from pets and children, until they can be processed according to humane practices.
